by Jesper for everyone
We are considering buying a Standard Horizon CP300i chart plotter. I ahven't been able to find many reviews on the net. Does anyone here, have any experience, good or bad with Standard Horizon chartplotters in general or the CP300i  or the CP300 (witnout internat GPS antenna)?

Hi Jesper:

I've no direct experience with Standard Horizon but both the CP180 and CP300 got great reviews in the British boating press last year.  I remember that they were voted as the best small/medium chart plotters on the market. I can take a quick look at past issues of Sailing Today, Yachting Monthly and Practical Boat Owner, and post the tests if you'd like.

I have noticed the reviews in YM and PBO, but I never saw the one in Sailing Today, which I would like to see.

I bought have CP300i, but have not install it .
It might be a little bit heavy for its stand and the joystick is a little bit too sensitive.
Othervise I dont have other objection. Yet.

I have more experience on CP300i now. I have it connected to a TrueHeading AIS tranponder.
It works excellent. I find the AIS very usefull when sailing in areas with much trafic and when sailing be night. I think the size of the screen is appropriate. A smaller screen would be too small.

I am sailing from northen Sweden down to the Canary Islands and in December I will sail over to Trinidad.

Hello Jesper,

I installed a Standard Horizon 180 onboard Aemilia. I think I offers more or less the same functionality as the 300, only with a sligthly smaller screen. I like the quick refresch rate of the unit aswell as the tidall information and all the other functionality I am discovering each day I am using it longer. It's also a great help when visibility is not so great. I am planning to add an AIS unit to it by the end of the year. I decided to go for this unit after reading very positive reports in the Practical Boat Owner and positive feed back from my dealer. I decided to install is above te chart table under an angle to make it visible from the cockpit. Somethimes I take my spayhood down when I am racing and found it to vunrable above the cabin entrance,

All the best,

Frans

Would love to hear your plans on outfitting the boat for this journey. The
more details the more interesting.

Best regards
