by Jesper for everyone
Hi Jonah

I am opening this discussion as a reply to your question, but in the correct subforum, which "Electricit" in the "Technical Section". the Forum "Help" is intended for the help needed for using Ballad Exchange.

Dynastart? I dont think my 1976 Volvo MD7a has a Dynastart. It has a generator with a device giving first priority to the starting battery, and swittching to the household battery, when the first one is full. Sorry I don't remember all the rigth terms just now, but I just don't think I have a dynastarter. You might have one though.

Hi  Jesper ,Sorry about that,I have studied the wiring diagram and gone through the boat thoroughly and the vessel complies with  all the colour coding which the drawing describes
with the exception of one wire.I think that this boat is as original as you can get,as is the engine, the starter battery starts and then switchs to dynamo mode,(hence the dynastart) and recharges that battery. The other battery is charged from the 35 amp alternator which is why there is a warning on the battery switches that both must be on all the time when the engine is running . Best Regards Jonah 1221

A normal starter disengages after starting the engine, a dynastarter will have to be engaged all the time I asassume, for the engine to drive it. My stater certainly disengages after start and one time when it didn't due to a fault in the ignition lock, it was over revved, and burned out, and I had to install another old used one.

I believe this is the normal starter for a Volvo MD7a, and I don't see why the engine should be driving a dynastarter and a generator at the same time. But I have no way of telling if somebody exchanged your engines starter with a dynastarter at some point of time. But you can check your self if the starter retracts it gear from the flying wheel after start, and maybe you allready have.

I just read your posting again, and obviously there is no doubt, you have both a dynastarter and a generaor running at the same time. most peculiar I must say, and I have little help to offer since it is so different from my own system.

According to the volvo site's product bulletin the MD7a did not come with a dynastart. The MD6a did with the option of fitting a alternator as well, so what you describe is not impossible, but probably not that common. I have a similar system to Jesper's with a manual switch instead of a flash automatic system.

The first MD6 was  delivered with dynastarter. I
have never seen a MD7 with dynastart. The original MD7 Volvo generator is equipped
with diode seperation for charging 2 batteries and it works wery good.
