by derby411 for everyone
Just wanted to say a big hello to everyone on the forum.  I have just joined up after we (my partner and i) have started the process of buying our very own Albin Ballad (Triola).  If all goes well we should be registered owners within the week and then we can get the repairs needed done and sail her home.

Its been lovely to see some of the photos and read the discussions on here and we look forward to adding to this great group!

Hello Triola Sailors

Congratulations with your new yacht, and welcome aboard Ballad Exchange, it's allways nice to see new Ballad sailors join this forum. My name is Jesper Milling, I initiated this forum, and carry the garbage out every now and then (as administrator). My wife Ines Milling and I sail Ballad no. 1200 "Søstjernen" in the southern Danish Waters, out of Dyreborg. You'll find us on the Ballad World map if you want.

What are your names, and where do you plan to have your ballad when it is sailed home?

Hello and thank you for the lovely welcome.

Sorry, i totally forgot to introduce us in my excitement! ;) Our names are Debra & Mark, and Triola will come and live in the River Medway (Kent, UK) once we have her home.  She's currently in Cowes Isle of White, so we have a way to bring her home, which we are really looking forward to doing!

It was rather a fluke we found Triola as we were meant to be practice sailing for an up-and-coming race in Cowes on another boat and weren't looking to buy a boat just yet, but as we ended up looking in a Brokerage and we found her.  She is everything we wanted in a boat so we just couldn't pass her by..

OH, i forgot to add that we don't yet know the Hull number of the boat but we know she was built in 1972.. :)

Hi Debra and Mark
I think you can be pretty sure that since her sail number is 46, her hull number is 46, which makes her one of the oldest in this country (and the world!).  Please do join the UK Ballad Association.   If Peter hasn't given you details, send me an email and I'll give you my contact details.

I have added our first couple of photos of Triola in the albums area if you would like to have a look.  She looks a little dirty at the moment as has been on the hard a number of months.

Hi Debra & Mark:

Good to know that yet another Ballad has joined our Exchange--the more, the merrier. Is Triola the version with the aft-facing chart table and no quarterberth? If yes, I won't feel so lonely anymore. Most of the Ballads here have a forward--facing chart table and a quarterberth, plus a more comfy saloon. I noticed from the photos that you have the "church bench" settees that I used to have too.

At any rate, congrats on your new boat.  May it be "kalotaxido"as we say in Greece, which, loosely translated, means "safe and sea-kindly".

Hi Nicholas

Thank you for the welcome.  *laughs* Indeed you are correct, we have a boat the same as yours with the aft facing chart table and the church bench chairs (which i intend on altering for a more comfortable cushion seat when we have her out the water for her maintance.).  I have to battle the other half though as he really wants a spinnaker first!

So what do your seats now look like?  Have you any photos on here?

All the best

Debra

Hi Debra

Just look around in the "Accomodation" sub forum, and when you see a couple of armchairs, then you have entered Nicholas's luxurious cabin. His next project will most likely be a fireplace, with a tiger fleece in front of it.

Hi Debra:

My approach to altering the settees was a bit radical.  You can see what I've done to the starboard settee by clicking on "Technical Section">"Accommodation">"All the comforts of home".  On the port side, I always have the hinged back folded down which turns the settee into a full bunk (I had a new mattress cut and upholstered). While doing so, I raised the base by 7cm and  created some extra storage space for tools and stuff. There're some photos of that in "Technical Section">"Accommodation">"Extra space" but unfortunately I had to remove some shots as I was running low on storage space in the forum. I can post them again, if you want.

I'm sure you'll soon realise that one advantage of having our version of the Ballad is that there's more storage space in general.  The port locker is huge and, in my case, it swallows a folding bike, two jerry cans of fuel, diving gear, etc. Also, the outboard bunks in the saloon are wider and that's where I store clothes, food, etc.  In that manner, it's perfect for a cruising couple. However, if I had a family, I'd probably prefer the other version.

hehe, it looks rather cosy!  I am thinking of trying to make that seat into a wider birth via a pull out section (which i think someone on here has already done) and then putting some plumper seat cushions on it... however that wont be just yet as we want to sail sail sail! :)

Mark and his Pa (a shipwright, very handy!!) are going down next week to do some work to the boat & install a couple of new bits.  After that we're get her in the water the following week if we are lucky and have a little practice sail.

Then a week after we hope - weather & tides willing - to take the 36hr or so sail for the third & last time this year home with Triola!  (Mark's Dad has a beautiful teak Old Gaff 'Wanda' which we are racing in the Round the Island race, so have sailed her in 32hrs from the Medway to Cowes and have also to return her before ours!)

A very busy few months ahead!

Hi Chris, we are from Kent in England.  Triola is now on the River Medway so she isn't too far away from us and we can get to her and have regular sails.
(We managed to get out in her last weekend and had a great time!)
