Saronic Spring (Part 1)
With the sailing season almost upon us--and the self-imposed deadline for a posting on the South Saronic bearing down on me--I went on a small tour of some of the bay's nicest spots. Aside from some scattered showers, springtime is probably the best season to do this, as the ports and anchorages are...

Re: Throttle lever out of the way.
Hi Peter: One of the biggest changes both Mats and I have made to the original design is to convert the starboard side saloon berth into a dinette. The old Ballad Exchange has posts in the Accommodation section ("Dinette on Taifun" and "Dinette on Moments of Clarity") with photos...

Throttle lever out of the way.
Hi to all: The following is something that has been recently implemented by my friend Mats Wik who has been living aboard Taifun (Ballad #911) for the last eight years. Currently in Greece, Mats has embarked on a number of major projects on his boat. I often joke with him that his Ballad must be the...

Re: Galley improvements
Hi Bob. We don't use all three burners very often but having them is very handy if you're cooking a bigger meal. Between having two or three burners I'll opt for three every time. Many years ago, during Phase 1 of the galley renovation, I ripped out the old icebox and built my own fridge out of 50mm...

Galley improvements
At the urging of Bob McGovern, I'm re-posting a couple of improvements I've made to the galley of "Moments of Clarity" which were first uploaded on the original Ballad Exchange. The first involves the installation of a stainless steel crash bar and vertical handhold--while avoiding to make...

Re: Christmas cruising
Hi Bob: What they say about the eastern Med is mostly true. The winter season is more stable than the summer one, even though we've gales in the winter too. Having said that, there're plenty of weather windows during all seasons, with the possible exception of late July to late August which is when ...

Christmas cruising
Hi and Happy New Year to all: Blessed by unseasonably warm weather (that still required gloves and full gear at night) my girlfriend and I spent a blissful three days on the island of Aegina over the Christmas holidays. We even had a cracking sail back to Athens with the log never dropping below 5 k...

New water separator
Hi to all: Last year, as part of the fuel system overhaul (steam-cleaning the tank, installing new fuel lines, sending the injectors for inspection) I decided to install a new primary filter. I bought an oversized Racor unit which uses spin-on filters and has a small pump on top which makes bleeding...
