I saw once a Pioneer 10 with the storm jib in the halyard at spreaders level and it worked fine without the running backstays.

I was thinking about using a mainsail from a Dufour Arpege. Fits in the ballad mast and in the 3,3m boom i'm about to buy and it's about 18m2.

I didn't use it yet. I have the Ballad 253 since February and since then no storms yet.
