Re: Happy New Year!
Brrr! You must have Scandinavian blood. That's very cold water up there! But at least it is liquid; nights here have been -25*C for two weeks. Stay safe & have fun, Peter.

Re: question about rudder
Peter, did you use a Delrin flat washer, or a bushing like the one shown?prjacobs wrote:Mine were also Tufnol, now Delrin. My bottom shoe is stainless.

Re: question about rudder
That is really, really strange. An open cage steel bearing, underwater, exposed to salt, sand, marine growth.... Probably worked quite smoothly for the first few days. Our bottom assembly is steel or bronze (can't recall which -- will check) and had a Tufnol (phenolic & canvas) washer bearing be...

Re: Mast step truss, inevitably:(
No need for paint; the epoxy is waterproof enuf for this location. But painting (white or light grey) will make it easier to inspect later for rust staining, standing water, etc. Those show up better against a uniform backdrop.

Re: Mast step truss, inevitably:(
No peel ply, tho I have experimented w/ it in the past. The bond was to older polyester & glass, well ground back and wiped with xylene to remove any factory wax. All the biax was laid in a single go. And this discount epoxy I use is a 3:1 mix & less given to amine blush than 5:1 WEST -- whi...

Re: Mast step truss, inevitably:(
Last piece of boat work before winter. I glassed in the keel area with that lovely, conformable 1708 biaxial fabric and epoxy, overlapping the two sides at the front by 10cm or so to create double thickness where the seam is. https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5688/22919844061_a368ea3f72.jpg Next year w...

Re: Locker lids!
One thing I should have mentioned in the other post: be careful with lye (sodium hydroxide) or hydrogen peroxide as wood bleach; they will remove stains nothing else will, but in stronger concentrations can remove the native color of the wood! Oxalic acid is the most frequent over-the-counter 'wood ...

Re: Mast step truss, inevitably:(
Mostly a trick of the lens -- notice the distance top of frame to cutout, and the black Magic Marker line extending to the right of the truss' bolted flange: that's your reference level. The camera is tilted a bit. But yes, the truss foot does need to be shoved right a bit (1cm) to achieve level. I ...

Re: Saloon sole 'hole'
Yeah, I thought they were ply. In which case, ignore the grampuses on WoodenBoat advising you to put them thru a thickness planer! :o  You likely have acid stuck down in the face-veneer surface checking (probably in the form of crystals) which will be very difficult to get out. Epoxy is basical...

Re: Mast step truss, inevitably:(
Progress on the new truss! As much work as we're likely to finish this year, anyhow. First step is to put the old truss back in exactly where it was and transfer some horizontal lines, tick marks, and bolt-pattern marks onto a plywood template (which you will see in a moment): https://farm1.staticfl...
