Brilliant! Was that a downwind start? Exciting. :o Good seeing a half dozen Ballads mixing it up on the water. The little boat that often appears in photos of Ballad races, the one with 79 on the sail: is that an Albin/Norlin 79? The photo of him crossing Gazprom maxi is priceless. Love the subtle grey-blue hull color of #1197 & the eye stripe on Santa Catharina. We may need one of those. Thanks for the post.

Hi Bob,
yes, at that WELCOME RACE of the Kieler Woche they used to do a down- or halfwind start, because it's directly in front of Düsternbrook Harbour (Clubhouse of the Kieler Yacht Club) and the Kieler Förde is quite narrow overthere with ferries from Oslo or Gothenburg approaching frequently. The 1rst Start at Welcoem Race is the 'opener' of the Kieler Woche and they appreciate the Spinakers of the fleet heading out to the sea.

The 79 in the sail is an X79. In the baltic, there are quite a lot of these danish built boats. They stopped building the small ones around 1990 (I guess) and now they only built X-Yachts above 32 feet (approx).

Best regards,
Joerg

Ah, that makes sense -- the X79 is closer to the Ballad on handicap than the Albin 79. Gorgeous boats, the X Yachts. Sad these Northern European builders have been forced out of the small boat market, but they face hard choices. Abandon the quality they are famed for, or build megayachts for Russian tycoons. Same happened to Royal Huismann, who once sold nice alloy 10m sailboats.

Thanks again for the photos. The Baltic is a beautiful place.:)
