I would be grateful if anyone has any data they'd be willing to share on this component.

The original set up was through mast roller reefing onto the boom.

This was later changed to slab.

However, all the original gear is still there and the gooseneck needs an overhaul.

The problem is that the original gear appears to be "superglued" together: the original turning handle is captive in the hole in the mast (originally there must have been a sliding arrangement through the crank, it is not articulated as is often the case).

The universal joint connection to the gooseneck is also stuck on the spindle through the mast.

Any advice welcome.

Hi!
Does anyone have a tip on a good (and reasonably priced ;-) webshop/mailorder company in Europe selling peripherals and accessories for boats?

For instance prices usually are a lot cheaper in Germany than in Sweden where I’m situated.

Thanks in advance

Hello All,
Attached is an article that I wrote about our cruise last summer. It has just been published in a local magazine called Pacific Yachting PNW. It might be useful to search for a map of the Canadian Gulf Islands just to the SE of Vancouver Island on the West coast of North America to follow along with. I hope you enjoy it.

I've just re-engined Alte Liebe with a Yanmar 2MY15 from the old Volvo MD7A. I have a wire from the house battery circuit which was connected to the generator to charge the house batteries. The Yanmar "experts" are not sure what to do. Their solution is to replace the separate Ballad battery switches with a all-in-one switch. Has anyone done my switch and still retain separate switches? And where on the alternator did the charging line go?

Ballad Exchange makes use of a free "Group" service provided by Microsoft, called MSN Groups. Some of you may have noticed that Microsoft is working hard on providing a number of new free internet services under the general term "Windows Live". (please check out www.windowslive.com as well as - .se .dk .fr .no  and www.windowslive.de

A lot of old services like MSN Hotmail, Messenger and Picture Gallery, have been moved to the new Windows Live platform, and recently I discovered that MSN Groups is expected to be converted into "Windows Live Groups" as well. From what I have been able to find on the net, MSN Groups and all their content should be moved into this new service, which off course will be a modernised and updated service, integrated with the other Windows Live Services, giving us among other things a lot more space for pictures. But we might also expect some trouble, since computer systems in general not always act like intended.

I have no idea when this will happen. When it comes, I will inform you all as well as I can, and hopefully it will be a painless transistion to something better. Lets all look forward to WindowsLive Groups, and meet whatever trouble the transistion might cause, with all the energy our forum deserves.

I'm sorry but I accidently deleted "Between the Sheets" from the world map. I just wanted to replace the "Placemark 28" with "Albin Ballad 1344" and I did something wrong. I dont remember the mailaddress attached. I tried to make a new pointer, but it kept disappearing. now there seems to be three pointesrs, but they don't show on the map.

If the owner of "Between the Sheets" would please restore his or her World Map pointer, sorry I messed it up.

New Albin Ballad World Map

You have previously received my invitation for the new Albin Ballad World Map. That invitation was done from inside Goolge Maps, and it included a lot of Danish Text, more than I had expected. This was not quite as userfriendly towards the most of you as I usually try to make it. I apologize. The main message however was included in english as well, namely the invitation to try out our new world map based on Google maps.

However, I had overseen a small thing. One needs to open an account with Google to insert information into the Google World Map. It's free of charge, and it only takes a mail address and a password. So it's easy enough. I tried to create a common user, using the mail address of our forum (albin-ballad@groups.msn.com) but I was not allowed to use it, probably because it is not a personal mail address.

On the Front Page of ballad Exchange you find a link to the new Albin Ballad World Map as well as the new one, and I hope you like the idea. It can be used for a lot more than old map. The old map was limited at 100 entries, and by gully we went to the limit a long time ago. I don't think we have such a limit at Google Maps. Furthermore, the map is a whole lot more detailed, and we may switch to satelite photograph and see even more details. My own Ballad for instance, can be seen in Dyreborg Harbour.

Best regards Jesper Milling

Jeg har delt et kort med dig ved navn Albin Ballad World Map:

To all members of BAllad Exchange. I have created a new Albin Ballad
World on Google Maps. You are hereby invited to have a look, and add
your boat, your cruising routes, your name, Email and whatever you find
interesting from an Albin Ballad Perspective. The new Albin Ballad
World Map is a lot better than the old one, and it includes satellite
pictures, where for eaxample my Ballad can be seen. TRY IT, it's great!

Hi All Ballad sailors, Can anyone help me?  I resprayed the deck of Sula, Ballad No.835 with International two part polyurethane paint, the problem now is rust stains forming around all the deck boltheads which is very unsightly.  These stains are caused by the paint preventing oxygen getting to the bolts.  Any ideas to a cure?

In case anyone is looking for a Ballad in the Pacific Northwest area, one is up for sale in Blaine, Washington.

I have been impressed by the interior of boats in which much of the interior woodwork has been painted white – the interior seems cheerful and bright.

I am attracted to the idea of lightening up and brightening up the interior of my Ballad by painting some of the wood interior (at present varnished Mahogany ) so that I have a mixture of varnished mahogany and white or cream painted wood. Has anyone altered the interior of their Ballad in this way and if so, any chance of posting some pictures to give me some ideas of what looks good painted and what is best kept varnished? Maybe some are already posted but I have not seen them.

Hey yo balladeers!

Happy new year!

We now have 310 registered users of Ballad Exchange, and every now and then new users join the forum. In two months we will be 4 years old. How will it all look ten years from now?  Well if it continues this website will have accumulated postings and images enough to be the main bible for anyone wanting to know anything about the Ballad, and quite a few of us won't be active members anymore. And I think it would be great if the knowledge we document here, could be saved for the future. And why not?

Well some years back MSN Groups was the hot new babe on the Internet. Along with other Forum services. Today the hot new babe is the selfcentered "social network" thing like "Facebook" and unfortunately it seems as if MSN Groups is not really beeing developed, nor is the amount of dataspace you may occupy with your pictures beeing extended. We each have 3 Mb. If you join Google Mail, I believe you have a million Gigabytes (or at least one Gigabyte) If we could only have 100 Mb for pictures, the a few of us would feel like born again (right Nicholas?)

Every now and then I look around for new and better Group services, (not that I consider moving Ballad Exchange to a new service, that's not at all possible) but I still haven't found one. MSN Groups still have by far the best look and feel, if you ask me. But forum services just arent hot anymore. In fact I don't feel certain MSN Groups will be in existence ten years from now. They allready shut down the Chat function on MSN Groups. Well nothing lasts forever, and so far a lot of us are enjoying putting stuff into this forum, so let's keep putting pictures and postings, and what ever into Ballad Exchange, and enjoy it as if there is no end to anything. If we make ten years old, chances are good we will be fifty too.

Happy new year to all, you make my day day every time you post!

The skipper.

PS: The wife and I went sailing Dec. 30 and 31 with two friends. The weather was fine and with a 4000 watt heater we could always go down and warm up. We had sunshine, fair winds, and tacking back on the 31st for 5 hours or so, and it was lovely. So thats kind of why this new year greeting is somewhat late. I'm sure you'll forgive me.

Hello!

Because now it's a silent season at here in Scandinavia, I spent some time for restoring my winches. I got them back from company, which made a brilliant new chrome surface to my old ones.

Some of the photos Ive been looking at of the Ballad show the port lazerette
open to the quarter berth below. Is this the standard configuration as it
seems rather odd for a blue water boat?

Hello,

PROPELLER CHOICE
I am next month changing my old Volvo MD7A to a new Yanmar 3YM20, 21 hp motor.
Now it is time to decide for having a 2 or 3 blade folding propellor (brand: probably Danish Flex-o-fold). The 3 blade is about double as expensive as the other (I now have a 2 blade folding). You may think then that 3 is better....

There are tests that in many ways say that 2 blade are better (www.flexofold.com) in many respects, but not all.

*  Has anyone experience about this choice, or knowledge about which is best on a Ballad?

My main aim is  to get maximum pull / strength when motoring against large waves and strong winds, and like going on a river in very streamy waters (the Rhine for example). Second aim is good speed, third is one the has little drag (=smallest possible breaking of the speed).

Thanks for any comments.

Greets:

Joined the list recently as Ive been reading it now for almost a year on line
researching the Albin Ballad. As I'm rather new to sailing without the
benefit of many years of experience as some of the members I would like to
throw out this question, not to offend anyone, but rather as I'm planning to
purchase a sailboat in the coming year. While there are no ideals and
everything is a compromise Ive narrowed it down to three vessels that I
admire: CAL2-29, Ericson-29-II, and the Albin Ballad. The intended use of
either boat is for an extended voyage into the Caribbean and then back home
to work some more and then with alternating winters spend in the warm
southern waters for at least six months. That's the plan anyways...:)

The problem with sailboats is that you hardly ever can test drive them unlike
a car. Being landlocked for now does not help the situation either but the
latter will change soon as this fall and spring will have a chance to tour
and hopefully sail the cal and ericson models stated. Ive spend enough time
on larger Ericson쨈s to grow to admire their sea worthiness eg: E-35 but its
too large of a boat for me to single hand comfortably in all conditions.

So my first question, since I cannot sail a ballad until I put some money down
and it would involve lots of travel to even to get to see one as none are
local, I was wondering if someone would care to offer an opinion on the
strength and weaknesses of the Ballad under sail and under various weather
conditions.

The second question for which I don't really expect an answere on this list
but tossing it out anyway is was wondering if anyone would care to offer a
comparison from a sailing perspective of the three boats. Perhaps someone has
spend some time on either of the two boats and would care to comment.

My biggest concern with the Ballad is the everything I have looked at (on
line) in NA would require a lot of work to prepare the boat in comparison to
the others. So from a price point the Ballad could and probably would be the
most expensive option as more refitting, painting and rework would be
required. Fortunately I like this kind of work so that is not the issue,
rather the cost. It can get rather expensive and that always detracts from
time on the water.

So in summary I'm not asking which one is better, rather trying to form some
sort of comparison between the three boats prior to plunking down hard earned
funds. All boats regardless of what I end up with will be test sailed of
course, unless I go crazy and pickup a project boat which has been known to
happen..:)

Thanks for any comments you may wish to offer and thanks for this list as its
a wealth of information.

Best regards
