Has anyone had experience of changing the cutlass bearing in the P bracket/strut without removing the prop shaft?

Hi,

I bought my Ballad last summer (1976, #865) that was completely restored in 1992.  The person from who I bought the sailboat had added a classy mahogany floor in the cockpit, in 1992.  He has used a 1/4 in. plywood on which some 1/4 in. mahogany boards was glued on.

After 13 years, the floor is completely rotted.  I plan to make a new one in teak.  I have a bundle of teak pieces that can do the job.  Because my teak pieces are not long, I want to use the same technique, using a marine plywood under my teak pieces.

I would like to know what kind of glue should I use to do it, considering that the floor is often in water.

Thank you.

Pat.

They call it "Gripper" and it seems a good idea. Haven't been sailing with it yet, though. We bought it at Hanseboot in Hamburg (a boat-show), just recently. Here is a link to the product-description: http://www.z-line-segel.de/folgeseite.html.

The mounting seems a little weak, but it might not be too weak. Go to the link to see pictures of how the Gripper is mounted.

I'll be back with experience mid december, when we have had our little christmas cruise.

Kind regards Jesper Milling

Hi,
My cockpit lockers were not compatible with the rest of my lovely boat and I decided to install a complete teak interior. It made a huge difference and I'm glad I did it. Anyone interested can contact the Swedish manufacturer at info@lidkopingsbatsnickeri.se . The price for the three lockers only should be less than US$600. Great fit!
By the way, since I'm not sailing to Sweden as planned I'm selling my boat. This should be of particular interest to sailers around Lake Ontario. Please write to kronlume@cs.com for full details.

Attached are pictures showing damage to the P-bracket on the Ballad I have recently bought. There are serious cracks around the bracket itself (pics 1 & 2) and it looks as though the propeller shaft has dropped. It looks as though I will have to remove the motor, completely rebuild the P-bracket and remount the motor, possibly with a new propeller shaft. All this will be expensive, so if anyone has any good advice before I start, I would love to hear from you!

I would like to put my instruments on a panel just forward of the companion way (under the spray hood) Does anyone know where I can get such a panel that fits the ballad? Thanks

David

PS The ballad - a great boat - tested in bad weather when I took her from the Netherlands to Falmouth.

I've noticed that the area of about 2 inches diameter around a few of of the hull to deck bolts has darkened/discolored .  I am guessing that what's happening is that the deck bolt is rusting.  Has anyone had this problem and replaced any of the hull to deck bolts?  What was your experience?  I'm assuming that I have discoloration on the deck itself, I'll have to repair the fiberglass by cutting the bad parts out and refilling with resin?  What caulk did you use to refill the hull to deck joint?  Thanks.

The head on my Ballad has been reemoved and replaced with a Porta- Potti and the through hull fittings have been plugged with epoxy. I would like to put a pipe cap on each one for safety. At first glance they seem like half inch and one and a quarter inch standard American pipe but no such fittings can be threaded on to them. Can anyone verify that these are metric threads and does anyone in the U.S. know of a source for metric pipe fittings?

Thank you

Does anybody know where I could get hold of a replacement cover for, or complete, ventilator for the stern locker.  We've clumsily broken one of the original covers, while trying to climb on board over the stern, and would like to mend it.

Any ideas?

If you have a swivel connecting your anchor to the chain, you may find this quite alarming.

Last week, I spent three days in a secluded bay, anchored in 6 metres of water, having let out 35 metres of chain on a 15kg Bruce. The wind shifted over this period but it remained calm in the bay. When I retrieved the anchor, I discovered that the weld that held the bolt allowing the two parts to swivel had broken and the parts were held by a mere 2 ½ turns of the threaded body. I twisted it around a couple of times and it came away in my hands. Thank God I was tied alongside another boat and the wind didn’t pipe up. Swivels are great because they don't allow chain to twist and help the anchor set--and re-set--but one has to be damn sure they're really well-made. Mine was supposedly a "heavy-duty version" with all the markings, etc.  I'm enclosing a couple of photos of the failed parts.

I'm wondering about the strength of the windows on the Ballad.  They're big, auto safety glass windows.  I'm curious as to whether they would blow out if they took a hit in bad weather.  Can anyone attest to their strength?

I have just had a quote for a mast step repair of 짙2,500 including craning out & storage. Does anybody know if this as reasonable quote as I can find no other info. on this matter.

If this is reasonable then I think I may go ahead & get it done.

We found some (minor) water in the area aft of the engine house (underneathe the cockpit) during fitting some wire for the land ac power supply. unfortunately we could not work how this area would drain into the main bilge. Does anyone know about the location of a possible (blocked?) drain pipe?

The non-skid areas on my Ballad from 1976 are worn. There is small, small holes in the gelcoat and some small parts of the gelcoat has loosen. The former owner of the boat has tried to patch it with new gelcoat (wrong colour).

I plan to sand the non-skid surface down a bit and repaint it with a two component paint/coating mixed with non skid particles.

Any body who have don’t this before and have some advice about how to do it/what to think about?

Does anybody know about any two component paint/coating matching the gelcoat deck colour (Jotun nr 5032/Neste nr 2233) on my Ballad.

Any advice is welcome

Continuation of the mast step discussion

This is a continuation af the mast step problem previously discussed in the "2004 Triangle" thread in the "Small talk Cafe" forum. I think the problem is worthy of it's own thread in the proper forum, so please continue the mast step discussion, and documentation in this thread. Here is a link to the "2004 Triangle" thread in which the problem originally surfaced: LINK

I asked about the mast step problem on the danish and the swedish national clubs technical forums a couple of weeks ago, so far no respons. But I found another posting in the danish forum, and contacted the poster. He had looked at three Ballad to buy one, all of which had the rust in or on the mast step, and decided to buy another type of boat. He happened to know about the problem, because a Ballad owner he knew, had it fixed for somehing like 3.000 euros or 4.000 dollares americanos.

I will pursue this problem here in scandinavia till we know if the problem was prevented by a change of construction at the Albin factory.

Kind regards Jesper Milling

Hi,

I've noticed on some of the pictures in the gallery that some owners have fitted rather neat ladders which fold up against the guard-rails i.e. they follow the line of the transom and then have a bend to bring the last few rungs up vertical.  The attraction is that when folded down the tail of the ladder hangs vertically below the transom.

The question is: Does anyone know if these were proprietary items or have the individual owners had them made up?

Thanks

Ian

I

I am the new owner of hull # 1271 "Mystic" formerly owned by Charles King who has posted messages on this site. Hello to all of you Albin owners. I am very interested in the anchor locker, the thread in this discussion just stopped, did it ever get finished? I would like to hear opinions on windless units themselves, good bad or indifferent. Also would like to know if any one has added refrigeration to their boat. Or make changes to the existing ice box. Thanks. mb

Since I was cutting up the deck for my new anchor locker (see other posting) I took some pictures of the deck construction, for all of us to study. Our Ballad is number 1200 from 1976, and I don't know if earlier or later models may have used other deck core materials such as Balsa. As the pictures show, in our case a plastic foam is used. The nut in the foam picture is only there for size comparison, it's a 6 mm nut.
