Dear Balladeers,

A couple of years ago we changed to a roller reefing system on the genoa so we have two spare sails with hanks.  Not sure of the age of them as already on Cracklin Rosie when we bought her.  I can't remember the maker either (Hood?) but can check if anyone is interested.

We need the space in the flat more than I need the sails so if anyone would like them please let me know.  They are in SW London, but Cracklin Rosie is in Chichester Harbour if that is more convenient.  I wont charge for them but perhaps a donation to the RNLI equivalent to their value would be appropriate.

No 1- Light cloth.  Hanks, corners, clews etc in good condition. A couple of repairs where the foot has caught on the guard rail during tacking (perhaps because of it's enormous size).

No 2 - Heavier sail cloth. Good condition, with an additional patch added by a sailmaker to protect against rubbing on the spreaders.

These sails are about 20 years old and made from standard Dacron and makes for pretty decent cruising sails for any yacht. Because I am racing my Ballad now, I have put a new suit of laminate sails on hence these are no longer required.

The sacrificial UV strip along the headsail is somewhat faded and could be replaced, however it still does it job of protecting the sails from damaging UV. There are tell tails on the sail and the luff rope is 6mm. This headsail could do with a launder and has a few small rust patches on it, however as it served with me, it will be a great cruising headsail!

One of the sliders on the mainsail is broken, and this again, could do with a jolly good scrub.

Advertised on ebay! Please let me know if you have any questions.

Dear All,

We have just binned our old spinnaker and will soon take delivery of a new cruising chute, which will hopefully be easier to manage.

We will run the tack line back to one of the mast winches, probably the one for the genoa halyard as that will not be used if the cruising chute is up and we only have one winch on each side of the cockpit.

Has anyone had any experience of attaching the block to the bow.  The further aft of the two is used for the jacklines, and the other has the shackle for the genoas.

1) Is it feasible to attach the block to the pulpit?  This would allow the foot to be further forward, but might be too much for it.

2) Is it worth attaching a strop to fit between the jacklines or under the genoa shackle?  This would raise the foot of the sail, but not really help it move forward.

Regards,

Cameron

My Ballad and mast are both 1978 vintage.   I changed from roller to single line slab reefing but would like to fit a mast gate to allow the mainsail slides to fall down to the boom without falling out.    Has anyone fitted a mast gate to a Selden mast of this vintage (1978) and any ideas how to obtain a mast gate for my mast.  I asked at the Selden stand at the London boat show this year and the person running the stand did not know.

The 1973 Selden mast is down and while installing new lights and doing a few other jobs the rigger has taken off a few fittings to check for corrosion. He took off the bracket on which the spreaders are mounted and found 2 areas of corrosion on opposite sides of the mast near the leading edge of the mast. The corrosion is approx. one centimetre diameter and half the section thickness has gone.

Any views or has anyone had this problem or needed to replace a ballad mast?

Robert

Has any one installed one of Selden's deck rings on the Ballad. If so any suggest and what size did you use? I'm thinking of choseing size 2 shown on page 62 of there catalog.

Triola needs new sails, we go more sideways than forwards so i was wondering where those of you in the UK have gone your sails made and what you thought of them and their lifespan!?

Thanks again everyone!

Hi

The ”hulk” at the backside of the mast widen up too high up from the boom. If I block the hulk so the shoes keeping the main sail close to the mast do not slide out in the free (when lowering the main sail), this problem mean that the boom is hanging in the sail.

Have any of you similar problem and perhaps solution?

Hi again everyone

I would like to know peoples opinons on whether hanked on or roller jibs are better on Ballads?  We have a roller currently and look to race Triola for some fun, but i was just wondering what other people feel is the best set up?

Thanks everyone!

Dear Ballad-Friends,

I'm planning to buy a new Genua III. What are the best dimensions for the sail? What are your experiences with high aspect sails? Thank you for your hints.

Kind regards

Michael

Hi to all:

I've noticed in several Ballads (Lady B and others) that you've mounted clutches on the mast. Since I have many halyards but not enough cleats or winches, I want to mount a set of clutches on either side of the mast. Could some of you please take a few pics on how you've done it?

Hi,

Does anyone have a suggestion as to the proper or ideal length for a spinnaker pole for the Ballad? Mine is about 10 feet and have used mine 4-5 times and think it is too short as the bottom of the sail stays rolled/curled in.

How about you Jerry Martin? Your spinnaker always looks good......

Jesper, can't tell you how much we apprecate this site!

I've been looking for a jib (Genoa IV ?)to compliment my 140 genoa.  Mainly to have something I can step down to on windier days.  Instead of having one made, I found a used sail with the measurements

Luff:   32'1"
Leech:  29'6"
Foot:  10'10"
LP: 10'2"

I know it doesn't exactly match the "official" measurements,  but the sail is in excellent condition, and it is a good price.  Should I buy it?

Sorry! My first posting on this issue did not turn out good, so I deleted it.

Working the whinches was always a pain in heavy wind when tacking. So I installed a couple of Barton Winchers, and a couple of wedgeshaped bases. After our easter cruise I will return with a report on the usefullness of both. Here are two pictures showing you what I am talking about:

Anyone got a photo of the mast crane?

I need to modify/repair wear/damage: the mast is still up at the moment.

Hello,
I have noticed that all of the Ballad sailplans show a staysail, a smaller jib set inside the normal jib triangle. Does anyone actually have one or know of one ever being used? It seems that it must have been a custom option fitted to limited number of boats or it might be a sail that was set flying (without a stay) between the bow cleat and the spinnaker pole topping lift. I can't see a really sensible scenario for one which is probably way I have never seen one.

Just Curious,

When I go to a sailmaker for a new headsail, the measurement used is 12.3 feet, but it is actually 11.3 feet. I've listed J as J(R) on my PHRF certificate. What is the story?

I have a Albin Ballad from 1976 with a mast from Ambau/VDM (see picture below). Now the "sail entry gate" for the sails fitting in the mast is becoming old and need to be replaced. What I mean is the bendable plastic peace(mine is white, see picture) which allows you to insert the sails "sliders" into the mast and are supposed keep them there when the sails slides up/down.

Anyone who knows how to contact Ambau/VDM or reseller?
Anyone who knows any other solutions/other making of spare part?
My Ballad is in Stockholm

Thanks in advance
