Shanty's mast collar is a mess. The powder coating has come away from the aluminium, and the metal is turning to a white mush.

I'm going to strip it out this winter & try cleaning it up, but I think it may be too far gone. Does anyone know if it is possible to obtain a replacement mast collar anywhere?

When I discovered two years ago, that our mast collar leaked water, I removed it, and bougth a car tire tube, which I cut up, swept around the mast, and glued together using what we call "contact glue" or "elmulsion" it still sits nicely even though it is beginning to fall apart just a little.

Ship Shops will sell you al kinds of solutions from closed mast collars you have to slip on when the mast is off og the the boat, to wrap around solutions like mine, only more expensive.

So talk to your local sjip shop, i am sure they have at leat one solution.

I did same as Jesper, used an car-tire-tube. But it is sensitive to sunlight, so I kept my old collar on top of it. When it (the old collar) wears out, I will probably use a piece of leftover fabric from my sprayhood to protect the rubber from the UV beams.

My apologies - I've used the wrong name. I was talking about the aluminium casting bolted to the deck - should have called it a deck ring.

On the subject of mast collars, I use Agritape to make mine. Agritape is a waterproof black self adhesive tape that is sold to farmers to repair silage bags. It comes in rolls 100mm wide. I just wrap it around the deck ring, and up onto the mast. Simple & cheap.

Do you think maybe the Agritape is attacking the mast ring. My mast ring shows no sign of falling apart, or loosing the coating, but sometimes these things hapen with aluminum (or aluminium) which is exposed to other metals.

Interesting thought, but I don't think this is the cause.

The coating was starting to lift when I bought Shanty, and as far as I can recall, the previous owner used some sort of rubber gaiter.

Agritape is just a plastic strip with a self adhesive backing - like Sellotape.

I've heard from a group member that Selden do a deck ring that fits. However, they are 짙124 each. I've also tried Z Spars, but the only ring they were able to offer looks a bit too small. I'm going to get the old ring off & cleaned up before commiting myself.
