Our echo sounder, which is probably the age of the boat, stopped working  when we laid up, our log stopped functioning a little while ago. As a result I'm going to replace both the sounder and the log. I am wondering, where is the best place on the boat to install the transducers? The previous sounder had an internal transducer, now I'm going for an external one. The paddle wheel for the log was just forward of the main bulkhead, i.e. in the bilge outside of the 'toilet.' I have looked at other Ballads and the transducers seem different on each boat. Does anyone have 'the ideal answer'?

I have a Navman multi 3100 which gives me speed through the water, log, depth, and temp. The transducer is mounted on the center line just forward of the keel, which is the recommended location. It works fine but is right where the lifting strap fits when the boat is hauled out. It is an easy adjustment to avoid this if you remember and you are there when they lift it. It is also quite sturdy having lifted the boat on the transducer and suffered no ill effects. The inside connections are very convienent being directly below the hatch in the sole of the forward cabin; and a very nice feature of this unit is that the paddle wheel can be pulled from inside of the boat for cleaning without having to haul the boat.

As you can see on attached picture, my transducers are installed in the centreline, the speed in front. I would recommand postioning in the centreline. Both are Simrad 15"serial Instruments.
