by derby411 for everyone
Well we're looking to race our Ballad and i was just wondering if anyone here has an IRC rating for their ballad?  Have they a good rating?

Shebeen does quite well on hers in Poole, but we've all been given different ratings!  IRC is really meant for more modern boats, and they can't quite cope with the fact that we may have different sized spinnaker poles and sails but the basic boats are the same and it doesn't make any difference to the speed.
I doubt that you would find your IRC rating very competitive.

Hmm.. tricky!  We're looking at racing with the Medway yacht club however they use the Portsmouth yardstick and you have to race an entire season on a given rating before they give you a rating... so we was wondering if it was worth getting IRC.. *thinks*

Albin Ballads are a Standard Portsmouth Yardstick (well Secondary, anyway), which means other yachts should be judged against them.  Tell your handicapper you're 997, and see how you get on.  Unfortunately, there are yachts on rogue Portmouth Yardsticks, but where there are plenty of the type of boat, it usually works out.  Because there are so many Ballads around the world, and they've been around a long time they're used as one of the measures for newer boats!
However, in this country they're rather well sailed, so we lose out!

Thanks for explaining that.  We're try and get the club to rate us 997.  We're just cruiser racing for a bit of fun and to get involved at the club so rating don't bother us too much, however its nice to know.

Later Mark wants to get some new sails for racing and a spinnaker so i should think he'd be bothered then, hehe.
