by hans j첩rgen for everyone
We are about to have made a new sprayhood and a cockpit tent for our Ballad.
As the old alupipes of the sprayhood have been broken at the ends and the ends are missing I do not have the excact lenght of them, would anyone be kind enough to measure the total lenght of each pipe so my sailmaker can make them right,
We have the old ones so we have the shape and also the old sprayhood to go by..
Have anyone tried having the sprayhood made higher than original, we find that some 5 cm higher at the back should make it easier to get below, as i remember there is some 20 cm from the sprayhood to the boom when the mainsail is up.

Hi Hans:

I replaced my sprayhood four years ago.  The old one had rather thin aluminium pipes which my sprayhood maker insisted that I changed to stainless steel. He was absolutely right, as the new sprayhood is really solid and can also provide excellent handholds. The problem with aluminium is that it bends and distorts so the fabric can't  remain really taut.  I used the old aluminium pipes as a template and had 25mm stainless steel ones made by a specialist. Then the sprayhood maker came to measure the frame and made the sprayhood based on his measurements. Yes, my sprayhood is a bit fuller than the original which is even better for sun/spray protection. I kept the same mounting points but added two padeyes aft, one on each side, to help tighten it.  I also changed the three forward teak pieces to a continuous track through which the sprayhood's bolt rope passes (much like a headsail furler's foil).  Finally, I added a vertical tube in the centre for support, so that I can fold the aft piece of the sprayhood and still leave the forward piece like a windscreen.  I'm posting some photos but I can probably take some better ones this weekend, if you want.

thankyou for your help, it looks realy good what you made to your sprayhood,
and a good idea with the centre pipe for extra support.

Hello Hans,

I will glaldy try to measure the frame of my sprayhood for you, but there is no guarantee that the dimensions are the same as yours.

As far as I can tell the sprayhood seems to be a similar size to most other Ballad sprayhoods that I've seen, maybe you will be able to tell when you get my measurements.

I have to go to my boat one day this week, so I will take the measurements then, I hope this will be soon enough for you.

Sorry Hans, the weather has been very bad so I didn't get to my boat. I'll try again this week.

Hello Hans,

I managed to get the measurements of the tubes for my sprayhood today.

The measurements are of the inner radius of the the curved tubes.

The forward tube is 155cm
The aft tube is 172cm

These figures are taken from the point where the tubes attach to the fittings on the cabin sides.

As I stated in my earlier post, there is no guarantee that my sprayhood is identical to yours, so treat these measurments with caution.

I hope they help, though.

Good luck.
