by the vagabond dreamer for everyone
Hello All,

I hope I am not boring everyone with my weekly postings, if I am my sincere apologies.

We have finally posted photos in the picture section of our work to date I hope you will look at them and welcome your comments.  The hull work is finished except for accent stripes (which will be done with tape), and the third and final coat of bottom paint which we won't apply until four or five days before launch.

The deck has been stripped of all hardware and fittings and is ready to be worked on.  There will be some minor filling of holes where hardware had been previously attached and later moved, some repair work in areas that have undergone repair in the past with the deck hardware left in place then surface preparation and painting.  We intend to paint the deck in two colors:  off white on the smooth surfaces and light grey on the non-skid areas,  I think this gives a very attractive appearance to the deck and greatly reduces glare.

We will be running all control lines to the cockpit and as we are replacing the original primary winches with new self-tailing ones (I believe self-tailing winches are truly one of the great inventions of all time) are considering using the original Lewmar twin 40's as the cabin top winches (if space allows) and leaving the mast mounted winches in place.  This will give us the option of handling the rigging fom either the cockpit or mast location as conditions allow as well as provide extra power at the cockpit line controls to compensate for the additional drag from routing the control lines and assist crew members with limited arm strength (like old men such as myself).

Your comments, suggestions and criticism, as always, are welcome and appreciated.

Fair winds all.

Well...another update...
We got a good day of work in Saturday! The deck has a nice new coat of Soft Gray on all the no slip surfaces! The rest of the deck is ready for a quick final sanding and the cockpit is getting close. we did manage to get all the holes glassed up that the SPO had cut and most of the finish work done there.
Mainly now just need a final sanding and cleaning before the last paint goes on.
The deck is a bit of a challenge to pain...putting on multiple coats creates some issues of how to get it done and not step on or drag the air hose through the fesh paint!!!
It will be a two day process for us...now I can mask the no slip areas and work from there at least.
I sure will be nice to see the shiny new paint and polished hardware going back ON the boat!

Sounds like good work, something a lot of Ballads probably needs. My own SPO has kept me busy for years now. Keep up the steam, and you will eventually go sailing, in a beautiful yacht. best thing there is.

Hello Folks...
A quick update here...we are back to work on the boat after all the holiday rush and commitments. We had a great weekend of weather here...almost like summer.
As always, things are going slower than we like, but we are trying to take care of  all the problems as we go...and we keep finding new thing that need attention.
The SPO (stupid previous owner) had made some very poor repairs that had to be undone and redone. Basically the deck has been a challenge...
I spent a LOT of time on the upper sides trying to eliminate the distortion of the deck due to the bolt that hold the deck to the hull. Also repairing a LOT of small dings and nicks from 30 years of use, abuse and storms...and the typical screw holes from things people have installed and removed.
We are getting close to shooting the paint on the deck. Shot the hatch covers and the colors look very nice. I'll try and post a few new pictures tomorrow.
The new winches are in and I've redone the old ones...we did get most of the stainless hardware cleaned and polished.
Hopefully Mother Nature will be kind and we can get some more work done next weekend!!!
Take Care,
Haimes

Hi Mark

The pictures were so good to see. Thanks!

If you are going to paint the nonskid patterns anyway, and I agree it looks good, if not painted in a too contrasting color, I urge you to consider using the Hempel Deckolay 67490 deck paint if available in your area. It may be a little thick to roll out, but then you may thin it a little with water. It eventually turns into a rubber like surface, with very good nonskid quaities, much better than any other paint or just GRP with a pattern.

The grey Decolay is not very light. I would probably mix a pot of white with a pot of grey to produce a light grey. but you should be able to open a lid at the store and look. There might be other makers of rubber like paint, but I don't know them. We used Decolay at the yacht club on a training sailboat with very good results. Sure beats Treadmaster on the price.

Here is a complete list of Hempels product (which for soem reason is onlu to be found on the danish version of www.hempel.dk even though it is in english)
