Dear Ballad Friends, is onyone experienced with the installation of a Volvo Penta D1-13? Is it strong enough for our ballads?

Kind regards

Hi Michael

The subject of suficient enginepower has been discussed previously somewhere else on Ballad Exchange, but of course it is a never ending story. personally I have come to the conclusion, that the origina  9-10 Hp is sufficient for achieving a speed of 5 knots in situations with no wind and no waves. If however you want to fight you way back to the harbour, against winds that are too strong for sailing by sail, you will need 20 Hp. We have an old Volvo Penta MD7A with 13 Hp, (when new) and in several occasions we have used it at max power and we just managed to make 1 or 2 knots. So if your engine is an auxilliary for harbour maneuvers then 13 Hp is OK, in good weather, If is is part of your safety system, it isn't enough.

The extra horsepower is needed to compensate for strong headwinds only. Strong currents going against you can not be compensated by extra horsepowers, since there is a limit to how fast the hull will go through water without adding an extreme amount of horsepower, and if so done, the rear will most likely be drawn under.

This is my personal opinion.

PROPELLERS
Josin has an MD2020B, nominally 18 hk, driving a 15" x 10" two-bladed Gori propeller through a 2,3:1 gear.
No trouble in achieving hull speed plus, (ankle deep water in the cockpit) at less than max revs, 3600rpm, in smooth water.
BUT. The last few miles back to homeharbour of my long cruise last year was painfully slow, into a gale and short-chop seas, when speed was wave-punched down to 2 to 2,5 kt.
Talking to propeller people at the recent boat show in Oslo indicated that the necessary thrust to help in these conditions would only come from a prop with more blade area, of the same diameter and pitch, the engine being more than powerful enough.
(A fixed-bladed prop would be best, but I priority sailing performance).
Both Flex-o-Fold and Gori have three-bladed folders.
Anyone out there with experience of these?
Would much appreciate advice before spending my gold.
John

Hello Gentlemen,
About eight years ago I re powered my Ballad (hull 102) with the MD2020 at the same time I replaced the prop with a fixed three blade 15x10. Hull speed of 6knots in flat water is easily achieved at about 1900rpm. Very rarely have I ever had to use more than 2500rpm to maintain 4.5 or 5knots even in very adverse conditions. The reverse thrust is also very welcome compared to the original two blade. Drag does not seem to be much of a factor but then I am not concerned about racing but I regularly see speeds of 6 to 6.5 kn sailing in 15 to 20 knots winds. Very happy with the set up and think it was a good choice.

Regards
Roger
