I have a Albin Ballad from 1976 with a mast from Ambau/VDM (see picture below). Now the "sail entry gate" for the sails fitting in the mast is becoming old and need to be replaced. What I mean is the bendable plastic peace(mine is white, see picture) which allows you to insert the sails "sliders" into the mast and are supposed keep them there when the sails slides up/down.

Anyone who knows how to contact Ambau/VDM or reseller?
Anyone who knows any other solutions/other making of spare part?
My Ballad is in Stockholm

Thanks in advance

Seld챕n makes a sail entry which can be used with standard slugs. Don't know if the shape will be exactly the same, but perhaps the mast can be trimmed to fit. We looked at this part, as Thalassa had no such thing when we bought her. It took about five arms to manage hoisting the mainsail as slugs kept falling out if the hoister was a bit slow. We finally decided on the Seld챕n Battcar system, which has a track that bolts to the existing slot. It works really well, the sail can be hoisted and lowered by one person and without having to motor into the wind. Be glad to send pictures if you like.

Thanks for your reply Heikki,
Been thinking of the Seld챕n system as well, just want to be sure if there is som simple "out of the box" solution first, before doing any bigger alterations on the mast it self.
If you have any pictures at hand I'd be glad to see them.

My Ballald #1266 does not look like this. I always used a sail track stop (west Marine #108332--$8.99). Lately, I have been using the roller reefer to store the main on the boom, feeding the slugs into the track when raising the sail. It's a bit of a workout when hoisting by myself, but not impossible.

I have got a effective and simple system with a little plastic lever at the bottom of the track which when vertical stops the lugs falling out. When I want to reef or otherwise remove sail from the track I push the lever to one side and out they come.

Interested in Marten's Contribution.

I have a Selden Mast . I have single line reefing that can be managed from the cockpit which is great for a ‘geriatric’ single hander such as myself when taking in the reefs!

But - horror of horrors - when I shake the reef out, as the wind lessens, I have to venture onto the foredeck and feed the mainsail slides back into the track from which they have fallen, and pull the main halyard up from a position by the mast. The device (mast gate?) shown in the picture by Marten would seem to answer these problems. I have tried to find this item on Google – Selden – Mast Gate etc but have not been lucky.

Advice please!

If you look at the Selden Product Catalogue on Page 47 at
http://www.seldenmast.com I think you will find the product that you are
looking for. If it is, then the Dealer link on the home page show get you to
a local contact.

Best of luck

I couldn't open the Selden link.

I made a replacement to the gate illustrated and I have used that in conjunction with a previous modification (which enlarged the mast gate cut into the extrusion by 75%) wherby slugs are pressed through a flap. This doesn't work very well because clearnace to the aluminium wall in the extrusion is not deep enough. (The clearance is therefore too shallow for the flap fitting, which I can't now change, modify or copy).

Anyone renewed the rudder bearings or serviced them: any tips apart from digging a hole for the rudder to drop into?

In the "Steering section you will find this one on installing new rudder bearings (bushings). http://groups.msn.com/albin-ballad/steering.msnw?action=get_message&mview=0&ID_Message=69&LastModified=4675484567888153682

I had the boat on the dry at the yacht club, and when the truck came by, with the crane on it, I asked him for a short lift, and took out the rudder. When he put the boat back into the water, I put the rudder back in.
