by yo55er for everyone
I have just completed my first trip in 'Korimako' and all though I had to get towed back to Douglas Isle of Man, with an air lock in the anti-syphon valve, it went really well, except for the tiller. Will somebody tell me why it is made so long? and has anybody cut it shorter, and has it made a difference? Also while I'm on; why has the engine got 2 covers. Trying to work on the engine at sea is bad enough, but to cope with an extra cover over the engine seems 'bonkers' to me.
Any help or advise will be much appreciated.

Cheers

The engine cover
would be impossible to remove easily, if at all,  for routine
access if it was in one piece. It is not too difficult to get the aft
section out over the engine if you have to.

Hi Dave:

I have removed the back piece of the engine cover completely after realising that it'd be impossible to change a faulty impeller
at sea (the water pump is at the rear of the engine). Psychologically, it's nice to know you can have access to all the engine parts,
including the gearbox and shaft seal. Without the back cover, there's a small increase in engine noise and the stairs are a bit wobbly but I plan to deal with both soon. As for shortening the tiller, the thought had occurred to me too, but after being caught
in a choppy force 7 I realised that the long tiller allowed me to remain under the sprayhood and still be able to steer. So I've kept it as is.

Hi Dave, Where in IoM are you based? I made a new shorter curved tiller and when I was at it made another very short one for use on passage with auto helm - its just 4 inches longer than auto helm connection which enables me to hand steer should need arise and yes I have to ensure I am not caught in stronger winds which require the full length. I also have an extension which I can attach and sit under canopy during normal wet Irish sea Summers
