Have you tried Volvo Penta webpage for a workshop manual. Therein should be the information you need. As a guess, the cylinder nearest the drive gears to the camshaft and injector pump is number one, and with that piston at top dead centre, there should be marks on the timing gears to be lined up.
Good luck

I've got the manual but it does not give that info. A diesel guy said it was the one close to the flywheel.

hello James,

the first cilinder is usualy de cilinder next to the timing gear, when you place the marks on the crankshaft coincide with the mark on the camshaft , the first cilinder have compression (valves are closed )

i hope this will help you further.

I've tried the manual and gotten advice from diesel pros. They don't agree on which is no2 cylinder. I set the timing using the piston near the flywheel. I've bleed the fuel system but can't figure out how to bleed the bosch injector pump. The engine still will not start. I need to know how to bleed the pump. The manual says there is a pump for bleeding but I don't see one. So as of now that's where I'm stuck. Thanks for your help... Jimmy
