by Mark for everyone
Hello all,

My 1971 Albin Ballad (# 51), Triolas, windows have always leaked a bit when dipping the side deck in the water so I thought it was time I fixed the problem before I went back into the water and replace the seals. On removal of the windows, I did note that indeed, the rubber was rock hard and came to pieces in my hand. The glass and original windows frames are still in great shape, so a nice cheap and easy job thought I... well that was until I tried to find replacement rubber seals.

Do any of you fine knowledgeable folk know where I can purchase these rubbers from? There are two types, the main seal, and the three other seals all of the same type.

The main seal is below:

The other seal is simpler, as below:

As ever, any help would be gratefully received.

Best regards,

Mark & Liz

I don't think there's any chance of replacing the rubber Mark- I first tried to get replacements about 30 years ago. I've been using mastic tape, called "rallitape 410" made by Astor Stag of West Drayton Middlesex. I don't know if they are still in business though, as I bought a box and am still working through it.

All you do is put two lengths of tape round the outside aluminium frame, one to go against the coachroof and one against the glass. Then reassemble without the rubbers, not forgetting to put the spacer on the inside of the glass.

I enquired to an outfit that makes new windows for the Ballad, when I was unsure of the condition of mine. (They turned out to be OK.)
They might be, or know of, a source of rubber for you.

I notice they list some window gaskets in their "Parts" section of their website.

Hope this helps,

Hello Mike, Peter,

Wow, number 3, and there was I thinking my Triola was an early one at #51. Do you still have her?

I am investigating a few routes and will report back what works best. From the five companies I have contacted (including ERTEC, thanks Peter, no cigar though), only one gave me a positive lead at SealsDirect with the below:

"The closest U channel we have is US158 but it does not have the L shaped leg on it. For the other seal try WS1580."

So we will likely try some lengths of these two types with some liberal use of sikaflex and expanded neoprene if necessary unless anyone else has any better ideas.

Best regards,

Mark

Hi Mark:

I believe there's a company in Denmark--other than Ertec--which makes new windows for the Ballad. Why don't you drop Jesper a line? I would also recommend sealsdirect.co.uk but you've already checked with them. Several years ago, I also considered replacing the seals as the forward windows would weep slightly in heavy weather. However, I was hesitant about tackling the job of removing the windows without having sourced new seals first; what I did, instead, was scrape off the old seals with a chisel and then recaulked the area with Sikaflex 295UV which is a compound made for that purpose. They remained watertight for a number of years and only recently have they started to leak a little. The key in this process is masking very carefully with good quality tape--ones than can do a tight radius are perfect--and removing the tape before the compound dries completely but after it has set a little. Done with care, the result is near perfect. I intend to do the same this year.

Mark, I am in Canada and there is a company "Spaenaur" it's a fastener company that carries bolts nuts rivets and window seals, automotive and other. Here's the link for the catalog you can download it and browse through:" http://viewer.zmags.com/publication/ccefab78#/ccefab78/39 ". You'll be amazed even if your exact seals are not there, you'll definitely remember an item or two that will come in handy to know they're out there :)
Hope it helps, Edgard
